Canadian Independents Gather To Discuss Federal Funds
The Canadian Independent Film & Video Alliance (IFVA) met in Montreal last weekend to discuss the reinstatement of $25 million in federal grant money following severe cutbacks. Over 7000 media artists from across Canada attended the conference which included seminars, panel discussions and screenings. Under the current liberal government, $326 million has been cut from the Canadian Conference for the Arts budget. Keith Kelly, national coordinator of the Canadian Conference described “a disturbing scenario in which the very existence of Canadian arts funding could potentially be seen as a violation of the recent [Multilateral Agreement of Investment negotiations].”
“The creativity and prolific nature of Canadian independent media is a testament to its need for expanded investment by Canadian funding agencies,” said Peter Sandmark, IFVA Coordinator.
