Hamburg Fest To Show 104 Films, One Third Are Debuts

by indieWIRE

Filmfest Hamburg 1997 takes place from September 25 to October 2. Thirty
five countries are represented in films ranging from Abbas Kiarostami’s
Cannes winner “The Taste Of Cherries” to Jim Kouf’s “Criminal Intent
starring the late rap artist Tupac Shakur.

31 of the festival’s 104 films are directorial debuts. The festival’s
Young Cinema section will be numerically dominated by the US, which has
11 entries this year including Mark Water’s comedy “The House Of Yes
starring Parker Posey as Jackie O. Festival organizers are also pushing
The Well,” directed by Samantha Lang, said to be “an intense
psychological thriller about female friendship that ends in hate,
violence, greed and distrust.”

The Hamburg event is not likely to escape the now almost commonplace
controversy over films from China. The festival will screen Wu Ming’s
FROZEN, which was filmed under a pseudonym to avoid censorship by the
Chinese government.
