"Mrs. Dalloway" Tops First Look Record

After earning $90,000 during it’s opening weekend, “Mrs. Dalloway
became First Look Pictures highest grossing opening weekend film ever.
The film surpassed the previous record holder, John Sayles’ “The Secret
of Roan Inish
,” which went on to gross over $6,000,000. First Look
Pictures is the domestic releasing arm of Overseas Filmgroup, whose
Co-CEO Ellen D. Little explained that the company is deploying a
platform release. FLP plans to release the film in stages across the
country. In a prepared statement, Little said, “Building upon the
momentum of the New York and Los Angeles debut, we plan to add
additional screens in major cities including Boston, Chicago and San
Francisco beginning the weekend of March 6th, and additional venues such
as Atlanta and Dallas in the following weeks.”

Little credits “Mrs. Dalloway”‘s success to “positive reviews and broad
press coverage” surrounding lead actor Vanessa Redgrave and director
Marleen Gorris, whose film “Antonia’s Line” won an academy award for
Best Foreign Language Film in 1996. Little added, “We are pleased that
the favorable response to this project indicates that there is a
significant market for, and interest among the movie-going public in
films based on literary adaptations.”
