BIZ: The Indie Top 10 and the Other Top 5: 3.13.98 - 3.15.98

by Mark Rabinowitz

The only premiere in this week’s Indie Top 10, Trimark’s Carrot Top
starrer “Chairman of the Board,” was stillborn with a $925 tally per
screen, while Live‘s “Caught Up” won the indie top 10 overall weekend
gross battle, but fared poorly in per screen average. It garnered barely
more than a grand per sheet. Lions Gate‘s “Love and Death on Long
Island” saw its average plummet, but that was to be expected,
considering its expansion from 6 screens to 80. First Look‘s “Mrs.
Dalloway” continues to impress, losing less than 10%, one week after
expanding from 19 to 68 screens (it’s at 62 screens this week).

In the Other Top 5, Miramax‘s “Good Will Hunting” showed some serious
gams, losing 6% per screen while dropping only 7% of its screens,
basically breaking even for the weekend.

While indieWIRE doesn’t list IMAX films in its box office chart, some
note must be made of the performance of “Everest.” The fish-eyed pic
topped all other comers with a per screen gross of 34,628 clams.
