The Indie Top 10 and the Other Top 5: 4.10.98 - 4.12.98

by Mark Rabinowitz

Lions Gate‘s “Love and Death on Long Island” climbed to the top of the
box office chart with a weekend gross of more than $190,000, down just
11% from the previous frame. Among debut films, Strand‘s “I Think I Do
bowed strongly with a per screen average of over 6,700 clams. Roxie‘s
“Kurt and Courtney” kept up the hefty receipts, adding four screens and
almost 40% in box office gross. Artisan‘s “Caught Up” seems to be on its
way out despite landing in second place in the top ten. The film’s take
was down over 63% over the previous week and posted a meager $468 per
sheet take.

The Other Top 5 was populated by the usual suspects with one newbe in
the list. Miramax’s Ice Cube-directed feature, “The Player’s Club” bowed
on 593 screens and posted a $9,940 per screen average and a weekend
gross of over $8,000,000. While not included in the Other Top 5 list,
Sony Pictures Classics’ David Mamet pic, “The Spanish Prisoner”
continued doing great business, averaging well over $12,000 per screen,
raising its box office take by over 80% over the previous weekend. The
film has grossed over $400,000 in two weekends of limited release.

The grosses for last week’s number one Indie Top Ten film, “Mrs.
Dalloway,” were not listed in EDI’s database for the past weekend.
