Three Feature Films Lead 1998 ResFest Tour Lineup

The ResFest Digital Film Festival has announced the lineup for the 1998
edition of its traveling event, with the 1998 tour set to kick off on
August 14-15 at the Directors Guild of American in Los Angeles, following
a stop in London this weekend. After the L.A. weekend, the tour travels to
San Francisco on September 24-26, and New York on October 16-17.
As the profile of digitally-shot films has risen in the past year, ResFest
has added feature films to its lineup, with Bennett Miller’s hotly anticipated
digitally-made documentary, “The Cruise” (N.Y. and San Francisco),
Stefan Avalos & Lance Weiler’s “The Last Broadcast,” (all cities) and
Iara Lee’s “Modulations” (L.A. only) being programmed. As in the
past editions of the tour, this year’s edition will feature narrative,
longform and music/experimental films. The London stop will offer
a mix of films from the 1997 tour and the new 1998 edition.
The L.A. edition of the festival will also present, in association with
the DGA, a panel discussing the pros and cons of digital filmmaking,
featuring director Miller, who shot his recently acquired Artisan film
on a Sony consumer model digital camera, Lee, whose documentary on
electronic music premiered at the 1998 Sundance Film Festival, and
digital video pioneer Scott Billups. Among the films screening in the
longform section are Michael Almereyda’s award-winning, “The Rocking
Horse Winner“, and Tommy Palotta & Bob Sabiston’s “Roadhead.”
In total, beyond the three feature films, nearly two dozen shorts will
be shown, and five longform shorts will screen, while over one dozen
projects will be showcased in the “Cinema Electronica” section. Finally,
the festival will also host an event featuring a live performance by
Emergency Broadcast Network, as well as other special programs.
In addition to their annual tours, ResFest has participated in events
and festivals around the world, including the Sundance, Rotterdam
International and Los Angeles Independent film festivals, as well as
the Conduit event that ran concurrent with the 1998 South by Southwest
festival and this past June’s RET.Inevitable event in New York City.
