CANNES '99 BRIEF: Artisan Adopts Jarmusch's "Dog"

Artisan Entertainment has acquired the domestic rights to Jim Jarmusch’s Cannes competition entry “Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai.” A representative for Artisan confirmed the deal to indieWIRE late Friday night at an October Films party for their Director’s Fortnight entry “Agnes Browne.” A separate rep pegged the sale at a “low seven figure” mark.

As reported in indieWIRE yesterday, “Ghost Dog” generated a lot of interest following its press screening on Tuesday, and an over-sold Wednesday screening which couldn’t accommodate numerous distributors. In an indieWIRE review published yesterday, David Bourgeois reported that the movie was met with “tepid applause (and one needless, but audible boo) after its press screening” on Tuesday night. However, Bourgeois called the movie Jarmusch’s “most accessible film in his 19-year career.” Praising the filmmaker’s “unique, gritty directorial style and the choice of actors,” Bourgeois singled out the work of actor Forest Whitaker in this intersection of “three disparate worlds: the Mafia, the ancient Japanese samurai, and hip-hop.”
