Former Good Machine VP Mary Jane Skalski is settling into a new role at a
different company after leaving Good Machine to join the commercial
production company, Hungry Man. Skalski is creating a feature film
division at Hungry Man with partners Bryan Buckley, Hank Perlman, and
Stephen Orent. In a conversation with indieWIRE yesterday, she indicated
that she will serve as the President of the new division, although final
organizational details and structure are still being sorted out.
Skalski has already moved into Hungry Man’s SoHo office, not far from her
old Good Machine digs. When asked about the scope of the company, she said
that the ideal range of film projects will be movies budgeted in the $6 –
$12 million range, targeted at distribution through mini-majors or studios.
Skalski is currently setting a goal of a few films per year as the company
“If at the end of three years we’d made a handful of films, I would think
we were doing amazing well,” Skalski indicated.
Skalski joined the year-old Good Machine in 1992 when the company was a
four-person outfit, including James Schamus, Ted Hope, Anthony Bregman and
herself. She and Bregman became partners in the company two years later;
two years ago David Linde joined the company as a co-partner.
When asked about the timing of her departure, Skalski said, “In the past I
have been approached (with offers), but they never really felt right. This
just felt right — the right opportunity, with the right people at the
right time.” Singling out longtime co-worker Anthony Bregman, Skalski added
that the Good Machine team have been incredibly supportive of her decision and
Hungry Man is a year-old commercial production company that recently opened
an office in Los Angeles. Skalski began working with the company on Hungry
Man partner Bryan Buckley’s feature, “Finger Rocks,” which is set-up at
Good Machine; she recently introduced Hungry Man to filmmakers John O’Hagan
(“Wonderland“) and Bennett Miller (“The Cruise“) who are now working with
the commercial company.
While at Good Machine, Skalski produced Bart Freundlich‘s “The Myth of
Fingerprints,” co-produced John O’Hagan’s “Wonderland,” executive produced
Jim Fall‘s “Trick,” and associate produced Kutlug Ataman‘s “Lola and
Bilidikid,” Jill Godmilow‘s “Roy Cohn/Jack Smith” and Ed Burns‘ “The
Brothers McMullen.” She was also involved with Ang Lee‘s “Eat Drink Man
Woman” and “The Wedding Banquet,” Nicole Holofcener‘s “Walking and
Talking,” Lodge Kerrigan‘s “Clean, Shaven” and Kelly Reichardt‘s “River of
Commenting on Skalski’s departure in a prepared statement, Good Machine
co-founder Ted Hope indicated, “She has demonstrated repeatedly an ability
to know how to develop material and talent to a point where both internally
at Good Machine and in the outside world, people are unable to say no. We
expect to do a lot of business with Hungry Man Films.” Skalski will stay
involved with Buckley’s “Finger Rocks” and Beth B‘s “Tsotsi.”
