>> Berry, Glover and Bassett Wrapping in Capetown
Veteran stage director John Berry has just wrapped on his adaptation of Athol Fugard‘s antiapartheid stage play “Boesman and Lena” in Capetown. Berry wrote and directed the film, which stars Danny Glover (“Beloved“), Angela Bassett (“How Stella Got Her Groove Back“) and Willie Jonah. Stangely and horribly enough, the play itself was originally acted by whites in black roles when first staged in South Africa in the early ’60s. Jeremy Nathan and Francois Ivernel executive produce, with Pierre Rissient and John Stodel producing. Funding was provide by Pathe Pictures and Primedia.
>> Ringwald, Bogosian “In the Weeds”
Producer Peter Glatzer (“Deceiver“) and writer/director Michael Rauch are set to begin production this month on “In The Weeds,” to be shot in New York. Rauch will direct from his own script, and Glatzer will produce. The film stars Molly Ringwald (“Teaching Mrs. Tingle“) as a waitress in the romantic comedy, with Eric Bogosian (“Sex, Drugs, Rock and Roll“) and J.P Pitoc (“Trick“).
>> Ang Lee Back in Action
Ang Lee (“The Ice Storm“) is taking a different turn back to his roots with his latest production, a classical Hong Kong action thriller currently shooting called “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.” Hui Ling-Wang and Tsai Guo-Rung wrote the script alongside the film’s executive producer, James Schamus of Good Machine. Chow Yun-Fat (“Hard-Boiled“) and Michelle Yeoh (“Supercop,” “Tomorrow Never Dies“) star in the 19th Century Chinese tale of the daughter of an aristocrat who disguises herself to become an outlaw. Schamus and David Linde executive produce, with Bill Kong, Ang Lee, Bill Fong and Hsu Li-kong producing. Production companies include Good Machine, Sony Pictures Classics and Zoom Hunt International.
