DAILY NEWS: IFILM Makes a Play for the Bigger Screen in Pact with IFC; Channel Takes Equity Interest in Site
(indieWIRE/ 8.23.00) — IFILM will make the leap to television
screens as part of a strategic alliance it has signed with the
Independent Film Channel (IFC). Next spring, IFILM will launch
a weekly half-hour magazine-style show on the IFC, concurrent
with a deal that includes marketing elements and the development
of joint content by IFILM and IFC.
In a conversation with indieWIRE yesterday, IFILM CEO Kevin Wendle
described the new TV series as “an entertainment tonight style”
program on independent film — it will be hosted from IFILM’s
Hollywood offices. Short films from IFILM and its content partners
will be included on the program, according to Wendle.
“There are lots of Internet companies trying to break through the
clutter, and the fact of the matter is that you can either spend
$100 million on marketing, or you can partner with other media
companies to get your marketing message across in other ways
without spending that kind of money,” Wendle told indieWIRE.
Discussing the deal with indieWIRE yesterday, IFC President
Kathleen Dore indicated that the series has a three-year commitment,
with 26 episodes per season. She touted the pact as, in part, a
“way to find promising emerging filmmakers” for the network and
the IFC Films division.
Rainbow Media Holdings, parent of IFC, is taking an equity stake
of 5 percent in IFILM as part of the deal, giving the site
promotional exposure on-air, via its Internet sites, and in
print via ifcRANT, according to Wendle. IFILM will drive
subscriptions to ifcRANT under the terms of the deal.
