>> Afineevsky Fires Up Cannon in U.S.

(indieWIRE/08.21.01) — Evgeny Afineevsky will serve as the new president of
New Cannon Inc. the company’s former head Menahem Golan announced recently. Golan will remain in Tel Aviv while Afineevsky, former head of Film World
, will be based in the U.S. Afineevsky has been involved in an
extensive number of projects including 30 musicals in Israel and produced
the Agatha Christie plays, “The Mousetrap” and “Spider Web” in Israel.

“I am very excited to have the opportunity to work with Menahem Golan,” said
Afineevsky in a prepared statement, ” he is one of the forerunners of
independent film and his successful strategies towards filmmaking have made
an historic mark and innovated so many new concepts in the genre.”

New Cannon also has a slate of films it will release, including a modern-day
adaptation of “Crime and Punishment” starring Crispin Glover and Vanessa Redgrave which was made several years ago, but never released. The film is

>> Annual IFFCON Takes Hiatus

(indieWIRE/08.21.01) — IFFCON, the annual film financing conference, has
announced that it will take a year off, citing a loss of funding for its
event. “We have decided to give IFFCON a year’s sabbatical to fully research
and evaluate the changing environment of independent film financing and
distribution,” IFFCON Co-founder and Executive Director Wendy Braitman
explained in a message posted on the event’s website (

“When we started in 1994, nobody was having these conversations about film
financing. We introduced independents to the idea of getting money from
abroad,” Braitman told The Independent Film & Video Monthly‘s Beth Pinsker in an article published on the AIVF website ( She indicated that it will use the break as a chance to step back and re-envision the
event. A think tank will be held in place of the annual conference to

>> Miramax Gets Additional “Apocalypse” Rights

(indieWIRE/08.21.01) — Miramax, which is having success with the release of
Francis Ford Coppola‘s “Apocalypse Now Redux,” has announced the acquisition of the Italian, Latin American and UK rights to the movie.

The company opened the film in America on August 3rd and the film has earned
1.2 million on 50 screens. The new edition of the movie includes 49
