(indieWIRE/10.18.01) — As if attendees’ nerves weren’t already frayed
enough by ongoing terrorist threats, the 9th Hamptons International Film
kicked off last night with a bomb threat. The scare here in quiet
East Hampton, NY came during a screening of the event’s opening night movie,
and right before a second concurrent showing was about to begin.

“It’s a weird year,” Festival Executive Director Denise Kassell told
indieWIRE, as attendees made there way back into the theater after the brief
break. Guests had waited quietly outside as authorities examined the
premises. “I’m not going back in there,” commented one festival patron, “You
never know…”

“The world is a new place,” Festival Chairman Stuart Match Suna told the
audience a few moments later. “Bomb scares in East Hampton? We all thought
we were safe out here, right?”

Yet, most festival-goers seemed unfazed by the prank and as the festivities
kicked off here, organizers took a moment to turn away from national events
and reflect on a local tragedy. The evening opened with tribute to Festival
co-founder Jeff Salaway who recently died in a car accident. In a moving
ten-minute video tribute to Salaway, organizers and audiences took a moment
to remember a man who was a fixture at the Festival and in the community.

Actor Haley Joel Osment choppered in from the city for the opening
screenings of Yurek Bogayevicz‘ “Edges of the Lord.” The showings were
followed by the opening night party at SWA in nearby Wainscott.

The Festival kicks into high gear today, and runs throughout the weekend,
with the annual “Films of Conflict and Resolution” sidebar taking
centerstage alongside the Golden Starfish Competition, a program of Cuban
films, and other screenings. [Eugene Hernandez]
