(indieWIRE: 05.07.02) — Since celebrating its seventh birthday last April, the IFP/West-Los Angeles Film Festival has changed programmers, moved its dates from April to June, initiated a $50,000 filmmaking prize, created a new guest director position, and added a number of new special programs and events. Now, it’s got a line-up.
The eighth annual LAFF, which unspools June 20 – 29 at a number of Los Angeles
venues, has unveiled the programs for its three competition sections along
with a number of special screenings, including a spotlight on Argentinian
cinema and a collection of films picked by guest director Alphonso Cuaron.
Miguel Arteta‘s “The Good Girl,” due for release by Fox Searchlight later this year, has been tapped as the closing night film. The opening night

The competition entries, selected by first-time programmer Rachel Rosen,
will feature 12 narrative features, 10 documentaries, and 17 international
features, each screening in separate sections. Highlights include Sherman
Alexie’s “The Business of Fancydancing,” Przemyslaw Reut’s “Paradox Lake,” and Christopher Scott Cherot’s “G” in the narrative category, Kristi
Jacobson ‘s “American Standoff,” Jeffrey Blitz’s “Spellbound,” and Thomas
Allen Harris’ “That’s My Face” in the documentary program; and Stanislaw
Mucha’s “Absolut Warhola,” Yvan Attal’s “My Wife is An Actress,” and Akihiko Shiota’s “Harmful Insect” in the international section.
“The filmmakers participating in this year’s festival represent the unique
vision and independent spirit IFP strives to promote,” said IFP/West

>> All Quiet on the Indie Front as “Spider-Man” Dominates Box-Office
(indieWIRE: 05.07.02) — It was a weekend where Goliath seemed to slay David
at the box office. “Spider-man” opened to the record-setting tune of more
than $114 million in ticket sales, while indie and specialty releases were
soft at the box office. Of course, nothing could really hold up against the
onslaught of the new Sony blockbuster.
IFC Films’ “Y Tu Mama Tambien” and “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” were in the
top 20 this weekend, with the Spanish language film nabbing $759,613 on
274 screens for a new cume of $8,397,488. “Greek Wedding” earned $666,304
on 147 screens for a cume of $2,567,045.
“The Mystic Masseur” from THINKFilm made $18,550 in its debut weekend, on
two screens, while Woody Allen’s Dreamworks film, “Hollywood Ending” earned
only $2,017,981 on 765 in its first weekend.
Manhattan Pictures release of “Enigma” earned $187,408 this weekend on 37
screens, giving the movie a total of $605,578 after only 17 days, and
finally, through its 73rd day of release, USA Films’ “Monsoon Wedding“
has earned nearly $9 million. It made $593,527 for a total of $8,991,903.
