>> Artisan Acquires Rights to “Amandla”
(indieWIRE: 06.14.02) — Artisan Pictures has acquired North American
distribution rights to “Amandla! A Revolution in Four Part Harmony,” which
examines the role of music in stamping out apartheid in South Africa. The
film, directed by Lee Hirsch, will have its South African premiere in
Johannesburg this Sunday, on the anniversary of the Soweto uprisings 26
years ago, a pivotal moment in the long struggle against apartheid.
“This is a very intriguing film because it showcases a unique form of
political struggle through music and ideas that make it very accessible to
audiences,” commented Artisan executive V.P. Patrick Gunn in a release. “We
are very selective about which documentary films are championed and this is
a film which we all wanted to support.”
The film was a hit at this year’s Sundance Film Festival where it won the
documentary audience award and the Freedom of Expression award.
