DAILY NEWS: Sundance Showcases "New Voices"; and Weekend Box Office

>> Sundance Channel Plans End of Year Showcase for Five Festival Favorites from Emerging Filmmakers
(indieWIRE: 10.16.02) — Sundance Channel has acquired a selection of
features for inclusion in special “New Voices for the New Year“
end-of-the-year programming. Five festival favorites will offer, according
to the Channel, a peak at new filmmakers to keep an eye on in the new year.
Set for the showcase are Josh Apter and Peter Olsen‘s “Kaaterskill Falls,” Doug Sadler‘s “Riders,” Eric Byler‘s “Charlotte Sometimes,” Andrew Smith and Alex Smith‘s “The Slaughter Rule,” and Bill Morrison‘s “Decasia.”
Acknowledging that films from talented emerging filmmakers can “fall through
the cracks” of the current distribution system, a Sundance Channel
announcement yesterday added, “the most exciting discoveries are often those
first-time features that announce the arrival of compelling new voices.” The
films will screen on Sundance Channel from December 27 to 31, including a
marathon on New Year’s Eve.
This week, Sundance Channel announced its acquisition of pay television and
video-on-demand rights to “Kaaterskill Falls” and “Riders” and it recently
announced the acquisition of home video and DVD rights to Alex and Andrew
Smith’s “The Slaughter Rule,” which screened in competition at Sundance
earlier this year. The company also nabbed rights to Christopher Munch‘s

>> “Punch Drunk” and “Columbine” Among New Box-Office Entries
(indieWIRE: 10.16.02) — A large group of specialty and limited releases hit
theaters over the Columbus Day holiday weekend. Among them were Cannes
favorites “Bowling for Columbine” by Michael Moore and Paul Thomas
Anderson‘s “Punch Drunk Love.”
“Columbine,” the new doc from Moore, earned $245,021 on 8 screens over the
four-day holiday, according to MGM, while “Punch Drunk” earned a whopping
$367,203 on 5 screens in its first three days.
Moore’s doc opened in New York and Los Angeles over the weekend and is
headed for debuts this weekend in Chicago, Philadelphia, San Francisco,
Boston, D.C., Seattle/Tacoma and San Diego. “Punch Drunk” will expand as
well, hitting a wide release in early November.
Fox Searchlight opened “Brown Sugar” on 1,372 screens to nab a strong $11.8 million through Monday while Lions Gate unveiled Roger Avary‘s “The Rules of Attraction” on a wide 1,437 screens this weekend, earning a weaker $2.8 million. Lions Gate’s “Secretary” earned $503,020 on 149 screens for a new
cume of more than $1.8 million (and an average of more than $3,300).
IFC Films‘ release of “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” rolled on earning $9.6
million on more than 2,000 screens. The film has now passed the $160 million
