Shainberg and “Secretary” Team Reunite for “Arbus”
by Eugene Hernandez
The team behind “Secretary,” director Steven Shainberg and writer Erin Cressida Wilson, will partner with producer Ed Pressman on a film about acclaimed 20th-century photographer Diane Arbus. The film, to be produced by the Edward R. Pressman Film Corporation along with Bonnie Timmermann and Vincent Farrell’s Iron Films, will be an adaptation of Patricia Bosworth’s biography, “Arbus.”
“‘Secretary’ was one of the smartest films I’ve seen in the last couple of years, and Steven and Erin are a truly talented team,” said Pressman in a prepared statement. “We’re very excited to have them on board the project.”
Michael Roban, who works with Pressman at ContentFilm, will executive producer the picture with Alessandro Camon. Roban also executive produced “Secretary.” Content International will handle the film’s international rights.
“Diane Arbus is one of the most mysterious, enigmatic, and frighteningly daring artists of the 20th century. Her work emerged from a deeply private place and profoundly affected all those who came into contact with it,” said Shainberg, an avid collector of American photography (and a particular fan of Arbus’ work) in a prepared statement. “As a young boy I used to stare at her images and wonder, ‘How in the world did she get into the room with this person? How did she come to take such a photograph?’ That, for me, is the great question for the film. I hope the answer will lead us not to a ‘biopic’ per se, but to a film that lives up to Arbus’ audacious vision.”
Producer Timmermann, who bought the rights to Bosworth’s biography several years ago, has been developing the movie with Ed Pressman for the last five years.
Shainberg’s next directing project is “Urban Townie” with Tobey Maguire, while the hope is to have the Arbus project in production next year. Cressida Wilson is writing her first novel for publication next year. Pressman has been tapped to receive an IFP Gotham Award this year for his work as an acclaimed producer. Among his films are “American Psycho,” “The Crow,” “Reversal of Fortune,” “Wall Street,” and “Badlands.”
