Yves St. Laurent Pix Still Strong; “Girl With a Pearl” Solid

Sundance occupied the attention of the indie industry over the weekend with few films opening in the box office, but, the cold hard cash is always on the distributors’ minds even in Indiewood. Empire Pictures sashayed its way to the top of the specialty box office once again with its dual docs on French fashion designer Yves St. Laurent titled “YSL: His Life and Times” and “YSL: Avenue Marceau 75116 Paris.” Destination Films debuted “Tokyo Godfathers,” while Lions Gate scored with “Girl With a Pearl Earring” in its sixth weekend of release placing second on the iW: BOT as measured by per screen average.
Fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent continued to attract the fashionistas to Film Forum for the docs. The films, shown as a package, grossed $19,310 and has cumed $50,840.
“Girl with a Pearl Earring” climbed its way up the specialty box office totem pole, taking second place. Lions Gate added ten screens taking in $544,225 at 51 sites for a shiny $10,671 per screen ($7,723 last week) average and a $1.947 million cume.
Sony Pictures Classics added two screens for its doc “The Fog of War” about former defense secretary Robert McNamara, grossing $93,701 ($10,411 average). Since release five weeks ago, the film has earned $500,542.
Newmarket’s “Monster” continued its roar in wider release. The film played on 221 screens, up from 82 last week, taking in slightly over $1.8 million for a per screen average of $8,168, compared to $10,293 last week. The film now has earned over $3.5 million since its release one month ago.
And, Destination Films opened Japanese animation feature “Tokyo Godfathers” on eight screens, grossing $37,127 for a $4,641 per screen average.
Next week, MAC Releasing will open “Dirt” and IFC Films will open its doc “Touching the Void” in New York.
