IFC, Metallica and Berlinger/Sinofsky Partner for Release of “Some Kind of Monster”

IFC Films will handle the domestic theatrical distribution of “Metallica: Some Kind of Monster” as part of a unique partnership with the band and the filmmakers, the company announced yesterday. The film, which debuted last month at Sundance, was directed and produced by Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky, the team behind the self-distributed “Brother’s Keeper” and “Paradise Lost.”
The distribution agreement is a strategic venture between Metallica, IFC, and the filmmakers’ Third Eye Motion Picture Company, which will have a collaborative role in the worldwide distribution effort in consultation with the band and their management. Metallica, who own the film, will oversee and pay for all marketing costs. In a service deal, IFC will match Metallica’s P&A budget and partner in the endeavor. Paramount Home Entertainment will join the unconventional partnership to release the film on video.
“It’s not just distribution-by-numbers any more. There are ways in which to work with filmmakers and films that are unique and interesting to us,” said IFC Entertainment President Jonathan Sehring said in a prepared statement. “This is an exciting opportunity to embark upon a true partnership: a business and creative endeavor where success is in the best interest of all parties. We are all striving for the same goal and each have an investment in it being realized.”
The filmmakers had almost unlimited access to the band’s professional and personal lives as they followed the creation of their Grammy-winning album, “St. Anger.” The film chronicles the band’s creative process, business maneuvers, intense group therapy sessions and substance abuse. Berlinger and Sinofsky developed a friendship with the band during the making of “Paradise Lost,” a documentary in which teenagers are put on trial for murder and accused of Satanism. The band’s lyrics were cited as an incendiary influence by prosecuting attorneys.
The theatrical release this summer will coincide with the band’s North American tour, to pave the way for bookings in communities underserved by specialized film such as Boise, Grand Rapids, Louisville, and Oklahoma City.
“We have a terrific opportunity to bring this incredibly personal film to a rock audience as well as the art house crowd, working with great minds from both worlds,” said Cliff Burnstein, Metallica’s co-manager.
