Regal Entertainment’s Denise Gurin to Head Art-House Bookings

Denise Gurin, SVP for Regal Entertainment Group has been tapped to oversee the theater chain’s art-house screens. Gurin is taking over those duties from Roger Paulson, whose company handled booking for the exhibitor’s art-house fare for more than five years.
The move came as a surprise to Paulson, who was given notice that his services were no longer needed, effective immediately. “The decision was made to bring the art-house booking in-house,” Gurin told indieWIRE. “We enjoyed working with Roger. He’s a good man.”
The Regal change is an organizational one and does not signal an expansion of the exhibitor’s more than 100 specialty screens in 40 Regal Cinema Art theaters (under the United Artists, Regal Cinemas and Edwards Theatres names), but the company will step up their art-house marketing, especially using new media, Gurin said.
Paulson’s experience in the industry included booking Act III Theatres for five years, prior to the acquisition by Regal in 1998. Regal kept him on to handle those and their other specialty screens. His extensive previous credits include marketing consultation for clients such as Miramax, Fine Line, and Sony Pictures Classics. Paulson will continue to book select independent art houses.
Based in L.A., Gurin will book Regal’s West Coast theaters and be the pipeline to the entire chain, while Ted Cooper will continue to book the East Coast sites. The chain, which includes more than 6,000 screens overall, offers specialty and independent films at theaters in more than a dozen states, including sites in Austin, Las Vegas, Miami, San Francisco, and many other cities. Gurin will meet press and theater reps from various markets when she attends Cannes for the first time next month.
She joined Regal at their Knoxville, Tenn., headquarters in 1997 and launched the company’s art-house program. Prior to that she was head buyer for Mann and AMC Theatres and worked in distribution at United Artists, before they were purchased by MGM.
Regal Entertainment Group is the largest motion picture exhibitor in the world. The company’s theater circuit, comprising Regal Cinemas, United Artists Theatres, and Edwards Theatres, operates 6,119 screens in 562 locations in 39 states.
