“House of Flying Daggers” – WOW! Chinese director Zhang Yimou‘s latest is a remarkable cinematic experience. What fun and what beauty. Set in 859AD, the film is the story of a young, blind dancer (Zhang Ziyi, pictured here) who becomes the center of a love triangle amidst the emergence of an underground rebel alliance known as the House of Flying Daggers.
From its opening moments, the film delivers some of the most stunning images I have witnessed on a big screen in some time: colors, sounds, music, and choreography that gave me chills. The film’s first twenty minutes, and later an extended battle scene, are worth the price of admission.
No doubt the movie will draw comparison’s to “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.” While its story is far more simple, it is built around a continuous stream of surprises and playful twists in the plot. Its as fun to behold as the recent “Kill Bill 1.”
