AFI/AFM 2004.4: Roca-Where?

AFI/AFM 2004.4: Roca-Where?

Roca-Where? That was the dominant question last night when Eug, Brooks, Johnny and I piled into my rental car to try and locate the after-party for The Woodsman, held at mogul Damon (Roca-Wear) Dash’s Beverly Hills home.

The wonderful ladies at Newmarket Films were nice enough to add us on a guest list that included Cuba Gooding Jr., Stephen Dorff, and even some other people that weren’t stars of the film Judgement Night. Speaking of Emilio Estevez’s finest hour, we were lost and we almost didn’t find the secluded home until we used my Hertz Never Lost device, or “Bette Davis” as we dubbed it.

Upon arriving early, we valeted the car and hopped into a luxury van that shuttled us to the actual residence (about 20 yards away). Once we were there, things slowly began to unfold with Mr. Dash holding court and constantly holding a bottle of his Armandale vodka, which he poured freely for anyone who needed some. Meanwhile, we enjoyed the poolside lounge and a few glasses of champagne.

Within minutes, the Woodsman cast arrived, including Kevin Bacon, Kyra Sedgwick, and Benjamin Bratt. We dined on some tasty dinner, and explored the amazing home with an even more enticing view. It was also a little United Artists reunion, as former staffers Mary Ann Hult (now with Newmarket), Kyle Thorpe (now with Focus), and Dennis O’Connor (now with HBO Films) set up a base at the poolside bar. I haven’t seen Kyle Thorpe in a over a year, so it was great to chat with the fellow Texan. He’s getting ready for his company’s big Seed of Chucky premiere later next week.

But really, you gotta love the Newmarket folks. It was great hanging with Liz and Mary Ann, and seeing Bob Berney having a fun time. We ducked out a little early to make it to the tail end of a German Film party back at the Arclight. By the time we got there, things were dying down but the krautrock/techno was still bumpin’.

… So I’m back at the Arclight today. Just got out of the doc Calling Hedy Lamarr (no Blazing Saddles jokes, please). In a bit, there will be the Silverdocs happy hour, and then a few more films and parties following that.
