A final party for ’04

A final party for '04

tricinPRTY.jpg What a fitting final film party of ’04 (for me at least), at what has become the popular nightspot for New York’s indie crowd, Tribeca Cinemas (formerly The Screening Room). Wednesday night’s Wellspring party for “In the Realms of the Unreal” brought together many of the familiar faces that have celebrated together at fiestas in New York, and at film fests around the world, all year long. For me it was a chance to say Happy Holidays and catch up before many of us head on our Xmas/New Year’s travels. It felt sort of like a night of greatest hits from ’04 parties past…

Katie, the MoMA archivist, was in NYC visiting from her undisclosed warehouse location in PA with tales of opulence after her recent trip as a projectionist at the Dubai Film Festival. Meanwhile Anne, a patron of the filmmaking community from Kodak, toasted today’s article profiling film fests and hyping the popular ’04 fest film she produced, “Lipstick and Dynamite” (she even made it into a photo alongside today’s article).

Many of the other regulars were there as well: Liesl from Ciinetic, Basil from NewFest, David from ThinkFilm, Danielle from HBO, Kwok and others from Tribeca, Alex from Fifth Night, Deb, Marta and Michelle from Women Make Movies, of course Ryan, Marie-Therese, Dan, Rob, Vanessa, Marissa, David and others from Wellspring, Wellington from 15 Minutes, Eamonn, Tom and Jason from Magnolia, Greg from Film Buzz, producer Diana, Kelly from IFC, roommate Sharon from Showtime, and even Mary from SilverDocs who popped up from DC for the weekend. Also making the scene, a number of current and former indieWIRE staffers and writers. including Brian and James, as well as Wendy, Erin, Andrea, and of course I am leaving out many people…

Must give credit to Keith and everyone at Tribeca Cinemas for making it into a real indie hotstpot!

Later, some of us hopped in cabs and joined a big crowd of others at some new club for “The Woodsman” party. The film’s exec producer Damon Dash had the place hopping when we arrived, just as Patti LaBelle was leaving after a performance. Guests were drinking his Armadale vodka, and dancing to the great DJs — Dash spent much of the night on the mic on stage commenting/rapping along with the tunes, leading people to the dance floor. Mariah Carey sat in a nearby booth, flanked by a slew of bodyguards who would encircle her whenever she moved troughout the club. Dash outfitted Brian, Kwok and even Bob Berney from Newmarket with a new pair of RocaWear/Pro Ked, white sneakers…and later Brian grabbed some fun iPOP shots, the highlight being one with lawyer turned chat show host Star Jones and her new husband…
