“Aviator” Leads BAFTA Race With 14 Nominations

Martin Scorsese‘s latest, “The Aviator,” winner of the top Golden Globe Award on Sunday, was nominated for 14 British Film Academy Awards on Monday. It lead the pack with nods for best film, best director, best script (John Logan), best actor (Leonardo DiCaprio), best supporting actor (Alan Alda), best supporting actress (Cate Blanchett), best film music (Howard Shore), best cinematography (Robert Richardson), best editing (Thelma Schoonmaker), best production design (Dante Ferretti), best costume design (Sandy Powell), best sound, best visual effects, and best make up & hair.
Marc Forster‘s “Finding Neverland” and Mike Leigh‘s “Vera Drake” were also big winners in the race for overall nominations. Each received 11. Zhang Yimou‘s “House of Flying Daggers” was nominated for 9 awards. Actors Kate Winslet and Jamie Foxx were each nominated for two acting prizes. Winslet singled out as best actress for both “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” and “Finding Neverland” and Foxx nominated for best actor in “Ray” and best supporting actor in “Collateral.”
Nominated this year in the category of “Best Film Not in the English Language” are Christophe Barratier‘s “Les Choristes” (The Chorus), Walter Salles‘ “Diarios De Motorcicleta” (The Motorcycle Diaries), Jean-Pierre Jeunet‘s “Un Long Dimanche De Fiancailles” (A Very Long Engagement), Pedro Almodóvar‘s “La Mala Education” (Bad Education), and Zhang Yimou’s “Shi Mian Mai Fu” (House of Flying Daggers).
Ten films are competing for the Orange Film of the Year; the list is comprised of the top 10 UK box office hits. They are “Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason,” “The Day After Tomorrow,” “Shrek 2,” “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban,” “Spider-Man 2,” “Troy,” “Shark Tale,” “I, Robot,” “Scooby Doo 2” and “The Incredibles.”
Stephen Fry will again host the annual ceremony, taking place on February 12th at the Odeon, Leicester Square in London.
