Six films will compete for the Actor Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, the Screen Actors Guild announced on Tuesday. The 2005 Actor Awards will be presented on February 5th in Los Angeles. Topping the list for the cast prize are the actors from “The Aviator,” “Finding Neverland,” “Hotel Rwanda,” “Million Dollar Baby,” “Ray,” and “Sideways,” all contenders for a best picture spot at the Oscars this year.
In female lead actor category, Indiewood releases were especially strong with Catalina Sandino Moreno receiving a nomination for “Maria Full of Grace.” The film, which debuted at Sundance last year and saw the actress win a prize at the Berlinale, was produced by HBO Films and released by the company as part of its partnership with Fine Line. Also nominated were Annette Bening in Sony Classics‘ “Being Julia,” Imelda Staunton in Fine Line’s “Vera Drake,” Hilary Swank in the Warner Bros. studio release, “Million Dollar Baby” and Kate Winslet in Focus Features‘ “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.”
In the lead actor category, five performances were singled out, featuring more films from studio specialty divisions: Don Cheadle from UA‘s “Hotel Rwanda,” Johnny Depp from “Finding Neverland” and Leonardo DiCaprio for “The Aviator,” both Miramax releases, Paul Giamatti in Fox Searchlight‘s “Sideways,” and Jamie Foxx for the studio picture, “Ray.”
Foxx was also nominated in the supporting actor category, for his role in “Collateral,” while the other nominees are Thomas Haden Church in “Sideways,” Morgan Freeman in “Million Dollar Baby,” James Garner in “The Notebook,” and newcomer Freddie Highmore in “Finding Neverland.” Finally in the supporting actress category, the nominees are Cate Blanchett in “The Aviator,” Cloris Leachman in “Spanglish,” Laura Linney in “Kinsey,” Virginia Madsen in “Sideways” and Sophie Okonedo in “Hotel Rwanda.”
