Laura Michalchyshyn Named EVP, Programming & Marketing at Sundance Channel

Former Alliance Atlantis exec Laura Michalchyshyn has been appointed Executive Vice President, Programming & Marketing at Sundance Channel, the network’s founder, Robert Redford and Larry Aidem, President & CEO announced yesterday. Michalchyshyn, who will relocate to New York from Toronto, will report to both Redford and Aidem.
In her new role, Michalchyshyn will be responsible for all creative expressions of the Sundance Channel brand, both on and off-Channel, including original programming, film acquisition, program planning, on-air promotion, and the creative strategy and implementation of all off-Channel consumer marketing. Adam Pincus, Senior V.P., Original Programming and Christian Vesper, V.P., Film Programming will report to Michalchyshyn on the programming side, while Kirk Iwanowski, Senior V.P., Marketing, Keira Alexander, V.P./Creative director, and Meredith Breitbarth, V.P., Advertising and Creative Services will report to Michalchyshyn on the marketing and branding side. Iwanowski will continue to report to Aidem on affiliate marketing and promotion.
While at Alliance Atlantis, Michalchyshyn served as Senior Vice President, Dramatic Programming since 1997. She has been responsible for all programming at Showcase Television, a Canadian dramatic cable channel that broadcasts dramatic series, mini-series, television movies and feature films. Additionally, Michalchyshyn was part of the management team that started Canada’s first women’s cable channel, WTN in 1995, where she worked as Program Manager, responsible for scheduling and acquiring movies, series and docs. She has also produced two independent films with director Noam Gonick, which played the international festival circuit. Documentary “Guy Maddin: Waiting for Twilight” (1997) and feature “Hey, Happy!” (2001) have also screened on Sundance Channel.

Sundance Channel, under the creative direction of Redford, offers feature films, shorts, documentaries, world cinema, and animation shown unedited and with no commercials. The cable network launched in 1996, and is a venture between NBC Universal, Redford and Showtime Networks, Inc., and operates separately from the non-profit Sundance Institute and Sundance Film Festival.
