Sunday is the Oscars, sure, but Saturday is the Independent Spirit Awards. And, more than ever, people will be watching the Spirit Awards from Austin because some of our local boys will be vying for their chance to come home winners. And that doesn’t even begin to touch on my new Texas film friends, Shane (Primer) Carruth from Dallas and Jonathan (Tarnation) Caouette from Houston.
Nominated in the screenplay category (just as he is in the Oscars) is Richard Linklater for co-writing 2004’s masterful Before Sunset. Also nominated is Bryan Poyser for directing the feature Dear Pillow. Produced by Jake Vaughan, Dear Pillow is an incredibly impressive debut feature and deservedly nominated for the “Someone to Watch” Award. As I’ve mentioned before on the blog, I’m friends with Bryan and Jake (Bryan used to work at SXSW as well) so I want them to win for that reason alone. But all the same, they deserve it and it would be amazing if it happened.
Meanwhile, Bryan and Jake have made some big announcements about their next project, The Cassidy Kids.
Check out Bryan’s blog and Jake’s blog for details, insight, and scoops as they prepare for Saturday’s awards … and beyond. Because no matter what happens for them on Saturday, it’s what follows this weekend that will have everyone talking.
