Montreal 2005.1: Juste pour rire

On Thursday, I arrived in Montreal for the Just pour rire (Just for Laughs) comedy festival. It’s arguably the biggest of its kind in the world, blending cutting-edge new faces of comedy with veterans and industry. Within minutes of getting through Customs, I was already running into Paul Provenza (co-director of the doc The Aristocrats, screening here) and Chris Gore of Film Threat. After some dinner and some Canadian beer, it was off to the first night events…

(An example of what a big media event this festival is… as various local radio stations set up camp all week at the Delta Hotel, for live broadcasts. This is only half of them, as the various stations compete for airtime with the many comedians.)

(Comedian Greg – Who’s Line Is It Anyway? – Proops takes the stage for the “Confessing It” showcase at Cabaret Music Hall. Besides a funny story about drugs in foreign countries, Proops quipped, “How’s this for a confession, I’m on Who’s Line Is It Anyway?, but I’m actually funny.”)

(Comedian/actor Harland Williams, from Half Baked and There’s Something About Mary, hangs out at the Delta Hotel bar sporting a new dyed ‘do. The Delta bar is the big social center late-night at the festival.)

(Popular British comedian Eddie Izzard lounges around the Delta bar as well Thursday night. Often featured in drag, Izzard left the evening gown locked away for the night.)
