Hollywood Reporter: Italy's foreign Oscar hopeful hits language barrier

Somebody forgot to remind Italy’s film industry that its submission for the foreign-language Oscar must be in Italian. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has alerted Italy’s Oscar selection committee that its Oscar hopeful “Private” is ineligible because it fails to meet the rule that the film must be “predominantly in an official language of the country submitting the film.” The dialogue in “Private,” which follows the travails of a Palestinian family whose refusal to vacate its house results in their cohabitation with Israeli soldiers, alternates between English or Arabic.
