The latest screening series hosted by the Austin Film Society, will be “Hollywood Detour: The Independent Mind of Edgar G. Ulmer.” The series begins November 29, and runs every week until December 20. Here are parts of AFS programmer Chale Nafus’ notes:
“Edgar G. Ulmer was one among many European expatriates who fled Nazi Germany and came to America to continue his career as a filmmaker… Without the studio support that other émigrés (such as Otto Preminger, Fritz Lang, and Billy Wilder) received, Ulmer became a master of the low-budget film out of necessity. His unique style and attraction to interesting stories provided the foundation for a modest career for the rest of his life.”
The series will include such films as The Man From Planet X, The Strange Woman, Bluebeard, and more. And, on the first night of the series, Ulmer’s daughter will be present to screen a documentary about the filmmaker. Visit the official site for more details.
