Rialto Pictures‘ redue “Classe Tous Risques” sashayed atop the indieWIRE box office table, opening at a single location attracting heavy audience traffic over the weekend, which saw huge studio offerings, including the latest “Harry Potter” installment. Sony Pictures Classics‘ “Breakfast on Pluto” had its theatrical debut at limited sites, grabbing the second position on the iW BOT as ranked on a per screen basis. Last week’s number one film “Sarah Silverman: Jesus is Magic” remained strong at fourth place in its second weekend out, following an expansion. Newcomers “The Syrian Bride” and “Zizek!” from Koch Lorber and Zeitgeist respectively opened moderately on one screen each, while other weekend debuts averaged more modestly. Focus Features‘ “Pride & Prejudice” was again the chart’s single largest grosser, with a half-dozen screens added.

Claude Sautet‘s 1960 crime thriller “Classe Tous Risques” had a new roll out over the weekend. The film had its initial re-release at a single location, grossing a magnifique $11,945, capturing the iW BOT’s premiere spot.
Neil Jordan‘s drama “Breakfast on Pluto” debuted on three screens, grossing $33,279 for a solid $11,093 average. The film placed second on the chart. “We’re very pleased and we’re looking forward to a great holiday weekend,” said Sony Classics’ co-president Michael Barker to indieWIRE Monday afternoon. Barker credited actor Cillian Murphy and Jordan for spiking interest in the film. “Cillian Murphy did a spectacular performance, and Neil Jordan has co-written and directed a [fantastic] film.” The film traveled the festival circuit over the year creating buzz for the film ahead of its release, according to Barker. “The film played Telluride, Toronto and the New York film festivals and the word-of-mouth [at those events] helped with the release. The film was quite triumphant in all three places.” Sony Pictures Classics will open “Breakfast on Pluto” in Los Angeles on December 2nd and will open further toward Christmas. “We will be opening the film in many cities on December 23rd,” said Barker.
Last week’s number one film on a screen basis, “Sarah Silverman: Jesus is Magic” by Liam Lynch placed fourth on the chart in its second weekend in theaters after adding 11 sites. The comedy took in $130,915 on 18 screens, averaging $7,273 or about 59% lower than its opening $17,782 average, while its two-week total is $307,379.
Eran Riklis‘ “The Syrian Bride” was among the weekend’s openers. The film grossed $7,235 on one screen, while fellow roll out “Zizek!” by Astra Taylor took in $7,026 also at one location. Picture This! Entertainment‘s “Blackmail Boy,” meanwhile also opened on one screen, taking in $5,335.
Joe Wright‘s “Pride & Prejudice” scored the weekend’s biggest gross with a $2.14 million take. The film averaged $9,690 or 27% lower than last week’s $13,326 average. George Clooney‘s “Good Night, and Good Luck” was the weekend’s second biggest moneymaker, taking in almost $1.7 million on 803 screens. Last week, the film grossed $2.5 million on 668 screens, averaging $3,745 or 45% higher than this week’s $2,078. Bennett Miller‘s “Capote” was the specialty chart’s third highest grosser, taking in 846,450 on 317 screens ($2,670 average, 41% lower than last week).
The combined totals of “Pride & Prejudice,” “Good Night, and Good Luck,” and “Capote” represented almost 75% of the iW BOT’s nearly $6.26 million weekend take. All 70 films that reported grosses averaged $2,460 with 2,544 screens devoted to specialty content. Last week, 75 films grossed $9.01 million on 2,710 screens, averaging 26% greater then the current iW BOT average at $3,325.
Minus the top three films, the remaining 65 films on the chart took in almost $1.6 million on 1,189 screens, averaging just $1,337 or 46% lower then the overall iW BOT average.
Laemmle/Zeller Films‘ “Down to the Bone,” and Miramax Films/The Weinstein Company‘s “The Libertine” are among the specialty offerings over the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday. Also debuting are Lions Gate Films‘ “Streets of Legend,” and “39 Pounds of Love” from Balcony Releasing.
