IDFA 2005.5: The Red Light District

IDFA 2005.5: The Red Light District

I returned from Europe this evening… after a very good time at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA). I watched many more films, had a couple of meetings, and did my best to soak in the local culture. And yes, that included a walk through the Red Light District with some fellow American festival programmers. Being my first time in Amsterdam, it seemed only proper that we take a look.

Now, I’m not making any judgments about what people choose to do… but let me just give a quick (photo-free) summary of one trio of windows in the Red Light District: Walk by window #1, you have a busty blonde wearing a cop’s uniform proceeding to bounce her chest against the window pane over and over again. Walk by window #2, you have a girl sitting down as she looks out the window and somehow manages to sit still despite the fact that her legs and arms can’t stop twitching and rocking and shaking, like only “good” drugs make you do. And then we have window #3, where a girl is (I kid you not) sending/receiving text messages on her cell phone while standing at the window. I would like to imagine that the text communication went something like this:

“Where r u?”

“The window. U?”

“Me 2 :)”

“Kewl… drinks later?”

“OMG, yes!!”
