Austin’s legendary punk club Emo’s is giving people a week of free shows. That’s right: FREE. And, it all kicks off Tuesday night with a show featuring The Paper South. Who? It’s okay if you’re unfamiliar, this is only The Paper South’s second gig. But the band – a combo of buzzing drone and pop hooks – left a sweaty impression on a December crowd for their debut show. Their sound will be appreciated by anyone who is a fan of groups like Red House Painters, The Clientele, or even the softer moments of Death Cab For Cutie. It’s a delicate but occasionally abrasive package of Brian Eno guitars and small-town America fuzz.
Full disclosure: the band’s singer/guitarist and bassist (respectively) are my friends and co-workers Shawn O’Keefe and Justin Bankston. But all the same, what do you have to lose checking out a fresh new indie rock band when it costs NOTHING to get in the door? Want a sneak peek at The Paper South? Visit their MySpace page. Witness the beginning of something great in Austin’s clubs.
Meanwhile, the rest of the free week at Emo’s will include shows by hype-happy Austin acts such as The Black Angels, The Arm, I Love You But I’ve Chosen Darkness, Zykos, and more. Check out the Emo’s site for more information. See you there.
