Every day through the end of the Sundance Film Festival, including weekends, indieWIRE will be publishing two interviews with Sundance ’06 competition filmmakers. Sixty filmmakers were given the opportunity to participate in an email interview and each was sent the same questions.
Christoffer Boe wrote and directed “Allegro,” screening in the World Cinema Competition: Dramatic section at Sundance where it will have its North American debut. He won the Camera d’Or at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival for his feature “Reconstruction,” and is currently working on an ensemble film, “Paris, je t’aime” (Paris I Love You) along with two dozen other notable directors. He lives in Denmark.
What were the circumstances that lead you to become a filmmaker?
I liked movies so much that they became an obsession. I am still trying to kick the habit.
Did you go to film school?
I saw a lot of movies. Then I went to university and saw some more. [I] got in to film school and played around with some very expensive equipment making stupid things, emulating what I had seen. Then I met some great people and we began making our own stuff. People liked [what we had done] and they gave us money to [work on other projects]. Now I just hope that they will keep [financing] so we can continue making our own stuff.
Where did the initial idea for your film come from?
My love for Copenhagen [inspired me], plus my desire to capture lost love and the great “taste” of Science Fiction.
What are your biggest creative influences?
R. Kelly, Carax, Stanley Fish, Lysander Spooner, Godard, Bergman, Bach and Hitchcock in no particular order.
What were some of the biggest challenges you faced in either developing the project or making the movie?
Making it good, which is tougher than one might think. Creating rules and an inner logic in a cinematic world where everything is possible is not easy. Or maybe it is, but it wasn’t for me.
Tell us about the moment you found out that you were accepted into Sundance.
I have no idea. My producer just called me up to tell me that I was to go to USA in January — no explanation. She does that to me sometimes.
What is your definition of “independent film”?
Something made with an independent mind.
Who are a few people that you would you most like to meet at Sundance?
There are so many. But on the top of my list there’re unfortunately a lot of dead people – of the living I just take anything with a smile that comes my way.
If you were given $10 million to be used for moviemaking, how would you spend it?
Make 10 movies. Accepting that one would probably be an utter disaster and two would be awful, hoping that five would be good and wishing that 1 (one) would be excellent and one would be a masterpiece. After a year like that I would take a year off – if there is any money left.
What are some of your favorite films overall and favorites of 2005?
For this movie, “Allegro,” my favorites were “Gigi,” “The Mirror,” “Possession,” “Winter Light,” “Stalker,” “Alphaville,” and “Et dogn uden logn.” As for 2005 films, I would say “Bubble” and “Sin City.”
What are one or two of your New Years resolutions?
Make more movies. Make better movies.
