When I was at a party during the Sundance Film Festival, several folks were buzzing about how an early screening of Jason Reitman’s Thank You For Smoking was missing a scene. A Katie Holmes sex scene, to be exact. This is not to say that the sex scene has been cut from the film, it was just missing from the print that screened in Park City. Rumors were bounced back and forth as to why, but everyone came to the same conclusion: it had something to do with Tom Cruise.
Probably not so, according to a Los Angeles Times chat with director Jason Reitman. Check it out here. Regardless, it’s a great publicity boost for a film that did not debut at Sundance, but instead unspooled in Toronto this past September.
Oh, and Thank You For Smoking is scheduled to be a part of this year’s SXSW Film Festival (ahead of its March release). Will the sex scene be intact? At that point, I would imagine so.
