What’s with all this gossip about “Crash” gaining momentum to upset “Brokeback Mountain” for the Best Picture Oscar? Is anyone buying this? Why am I even wasting my time addressing this topic? It’s not like the Oscars frequently recognize what I deem to be worthy movies, anyway, but please, this rumor has to be stopped before it becomes even a whiff of a reality, or the Academy will become what I’ve suspected all along: a bunch of LA-sheltered old folks who don’t know quality cinema unless it came up and spat in their faces.
The New York Times’s Carpetbagger reports of a conversation he had with one Academy voter recently who said he was marking “Crash” for Best Picture – kind of as a default. “I just found ‘Crash’ to be a far more original movie,” the old man said, relative to “Brokeback Mountain.” More original than tragic gay cowboy love story? Hmm.
Anyway, the man continued to explain, “he would have liked to have been voting for a big studio movie – he used to be part of one of its hulking components – but ‘they just didn’t give us anything to choose from this year. Most of the movies this year are small and intellectual.’” This is what we have to work with in the Academy? “Small” and “intellectual,” oh no! What a horror for Academy members that they have to watch an intellectual film. Jesus fucking Christ, perhaps the “Crash” movement isn’t all that impossible when senile dullards like this guy make up the Academy’s membership.
At least Movie City New’s Gurus o’ Gold still have some common sense: as of Feb. 8, they still had “Brokeback Mountain” unanimously trouncing “Crash.” Oh, why do I care? Because I still care about cinema, and “Crash,” quite simply, is a mess. Please Academy, don’t make us Americans look even more stupid than we already appear to be.
