As Theaters Suffer, Sundance Tries Exhibition Again

After abandoning an effort to launch a Sundance Cinemas chain a few years ago, Robert Redford’s Sundance Group is trying again, reports the Holywood Reporter. The company purchased San Francisco’s Kabuki 8 Theatre from AMC Theatres and plans to open it in the early fall. Just as theaters are facing their toughest time yet, I can’t imagine the timing bodes well for Sundance’s exhibition business. But more screens for art house films should be considered a victory for indie filmmakers. According to the story, it looks like the company plans to have about four theaters in metro areas in the near future. I wonder what Landmark Cinemas thinks about this. . .
