SF Chronicle: Buscemi directs for love, not cash

The financing for Steve Buscemi’s current project, “Interview,” has fallen through twice. “Just another hard-luck story,” he says, his self-deprecating laughter filling a dark hotel suite. “Lonesome Jim,” a Buscemi-directed film that did come to fruition, arrives in theaters this week. Its making also involved the rug being pulled out from under Buscemi, an actor and filmmaker who helped shape the independent film movement in the ’90s. So why does Buscemi repeatedly court the punishment? He directs because he loves it. Ron Dicker speaks with Buscemi about his current projects.
