As Anthony Kaufman weighs in with his take on the AIVF situation and the state of the nonprofit media arts organizations in the Village Voice this week, an interesting dialogue has emerged within the comments to Jim McKay‘s First Person article in indieWIRE.
Where will it all lead…
Well, many people have told me that they feel Jim’s article hits the nail directly on the head (even if that nail is in AIVF’s coffin). The group is clearly about to undergo a major transformation and Its important to consider all that AIVF has accomplished over the years and support the spirit of the organization, which is still alive and well in this community (former AIVF staffers Bo Mehrad and James Israel each posted important blog entries with great perspective).
What can be done to preserve that spirit as AIVF morphs in the coming weeks? Responding to one comment to Jim’s piece, I expressed an interest in indieWIRE creating a new monthly advocacy column and I have already received emails supporting that proposal. Meanwhile Julie from IndieIN proposed some sort of network for indie film focused organizations, which I think is a great idea. An alliance of like-minded groups would carry some weight. This is certainly worth pursuing.
