I was at Waterloo Records recently when I happened upon a new release by Portastatic, the band fronted by former Superchunk leader (and Merge Records principle) Mac McCaughan. The only other Portastatic album I own is the band’s score for a Canadian film called Looking for Leonard, which I programmed for a world premiere at SXSW in 2002. The new album, just released this month, is also a film score. The film in question is a new title, Who Loves the Sun. I had read their new album would be a film score, but nothing more. I flipped over the packaging to see two familiar names: Molly Parker and Matt Bissonnette. I had no idea this is what it was.
Molly, as fans of both Deadwood and Six Feet Under will recall, is an accomplished Canadian actress who first broke through with a starring role in the Miranda July/Wayne Wang/Paul Auster film, The Center of the World. Matt is her husband. Anyway, we premiered Looking for Leonard (which Matt co-directed and Molly co-starred in) to great acclaim in 2002 and Molly & Matt and the whole team came to town. I even remember, at a party, Molly and I talking about how much we loved Miguel Arteta (who she was working with on Six Feet Under). The last time I ran into Matt was at the Toronto Film Festival this past September, where he was hanging out with doc filmmaker A.J. Schnack (his own documentary premiered at SXSW in 2002 as well).
Anyway, bringing us back to the new film, there’s a trailer online now. The film stars Molly, Lukas Haas, and Adam Scott. It’s written and directed solely by Matt Bissonnette. According to the trailer, it will be in theaters this Fall. But that means Canadian theaters. So, will we see a premiere at Toronto this September?
