In a Reuters piece, Bob Tourtellotte wonders about a “Sundance curse” that hurts high-profile movies acquired for big money at the fest. Will it strike “Little Miss Sunshine,” which was acquired for more than $10 million this year by Fox Searchlight. Other acquisitions in that range included “The Spitfire Grill” (Castle Rock) which made nearly $12.7 milllion in 1996 and “Happy Texas” (Miramax) which made just under $2 million in 1999. “Hustle & Flow” (Paramount Classics) made $22 million last year (it was acquired as part of a 3-picture, $16 million deal) and finally, “Tadpole,” which sold for $5 million (Miramax) made just under $2.9 million in 2002.
I’d wager that the quirky, relatively low-budget “LMS” will avoid any curse, given Fox’s recent aggressive screening program and the fact that the crowd-pleasing comedy scored a number of positive ratings and has a 93% fresh rating on RottenTomatoes as of today. Any predictions?
