There’s a Japanese samurai action film, opening in New York this weekend and in L.A. July 28, called Azumi. Sound familiar? Maybe that’s because it played SXSW (and Sundance) more than two years ago. Proving better to be late than never, director Ryuhei (Versus) Kitamura’s blood-soaked crowd-pleaser is something that should be witnessed on the big screen (I’m talking to you, anime fanboys with the bootleg DVD at home). Between this, Clerks II, and Monster House, it’s a damn fine weekend for theaters. What’s also worth noting, too, is that the other weekend competition is My Super Ex-Girlfriend and Lady in the Water. Which film has the best shot at working for audiences? That would be the Clerks sequel… imagine that.
