BritDoc 2006.2: Gimme Shelter

BritDoc is in its homestretch (it’s only three days long), and everyone seems to be genuinely enjoying themselves. The weather has gotten a bit better and the vibe of the festival is really comfortable. Not to mention, we’re all living in the dorms here at Keble College, Oxford. While that may sound odd, everyone has remarked that the dorms here are leaps and bounds better than any of us experienced while in American schools…

(An incredibly popular and essential aspect of BritDoc, has been the PItching Forums. Audiences watch as filmmakers deliver a pitch on their doc-in-progress to commissioning editors and foundations from around the globe. Here, filmmaker Lionel Mill is presenting his doc, ‘Inside the Kingdom,’ to reps from HBO, Arte France, IFC, the Ford Foundation, Al Jazeera, and more.)

(After our great Festival Programming Panel, filmmakers in the audience rush the dais to speak with Sandra Hebron from the London Film Festival, as Colin Brown from Screen International – and our moderator – looks on. I was also on the panel with John Cooper from Sundance and Michael Thornton, formerly of Wellspring, but now a sales agent with Forward Entertainment.)

(Just before an outdoor park screening of the lowrider doc, ‘Sunday Driver,’ the festival hosted cocktails for its delegates. Pictured here are Screen International writer, and former indieWIRE staffer, Wendy Mitchell as well as SBS Australia programmer Mark Atkin.)

(It seemed as though everyone attending BritDoc had dinner at the same place Thursday night. While being part of my own, 10-person strong meal, I stumbled upon another dinner party that included ‘War Tapes’ director Deborah Scranton, left, and ‘Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room’ director Alex Gibney. Scranton’s film is part of the festival’s program, while Gibney sat on a journalism panel Friday morning.)
