Remember when Nicolas Cage was supposed to play the Man of Steel? Or, how about Ashton Kutcher? John DeFore writes up an overview piece for The Austin American-Statesman, recalling the many almost-incarnations of this latest installment of the Superman film series. Here’s an excerpt from the full story:
Along the way, some aborted versions of the project sounded appealing enough to daydream about, whether they would have made good movies or not.
Wolfgang Petersen (“The Perfect Storm”) was supposed to direct a film pitting Superman against Batman, perhaps starring Jude Law as the Man of Steel. Comics fans know that fight isn’t as one-sided as it might sound; the Kryptonian might have an edge in the muscle department, but the Dark Knight has brains to burn (and a secret stash of Kryptonite, just in case).
Writer/director Kevin Smith, who has penned Green Arrow comics in between making movies, was hired to write a screenplay — maybe he should have reimagined Clark Kent as a foul-mouthed Quick Stop employee and combined “Superman Returns” with his upcoming “Clerks” sequel. Didn’t somebody once suggest Smith’s buddy Ben Affleck would look good with an “S” on his chest?
