Cat Power Attracts Wong Kar Wai, Along with Everyone Else

Even though I’m a huge fan of Cat Power, I’ve always avoided her live shows as everyone I know seemed to have a story about Chan Marshall’s bizarre, frustrating onstage antics during performances, whether it be sporting long hair completely covering her face (ala Cousin It), never finishing songs, or even interrupting an outdoor gig once to converse with a squirrel. Apparently all of this bizarre activity was the result of Chan Marshall’s battle with alcohol and drugs, which generally consisted of a bottle of scotch and Xanax. Now in recovery and having let out her most critically applauded album yet, “The Greatest,” she has rebound spectacularly, as the NY Times Winter Miller noted earlier this week. Filmmaker Wong Kar Wai even “invited her to play Jude Law’s ex-lover in the movie he is now shooting” and “was in the habit of playing “The Greatest” for his actors before each scene.”

I can’t wait to see her next show. Check out this great clip of Chan Marshall being goofy and sexy as hell as she performs “Living Proof” on the Late Show with David Letterman.
