dlukeSM.jpgI still vividly remember sitting across from Derek Luke and his wife Sophia during a Toronto fest dinner for his first feature, “Antwone Fisher.” The two seemed a little overwhelmed by the growing buzz about the movie and his performance, so it was a real treat a few months later watching Luke’s emotional Spirit Awards speech accepting his trophy for the role and sharing it with his wife while also admitting that he had waited tables at that very event four years earlier…

Today, we crossed paths again, at Focus Features‘ afternoon reception for Luke’s new film “Catch A Fire (iPOP photos coming soon). I would have expected the youthful energy and sense of wonder to have faded by now, but Luke seems to have maintained the same sort of optimism and enthusiasm for his life and work. Kudos. With this new film, he will no doubt gain wider attention (and perhaps a few accolades). I couldn’t be happier for him and his wife. Kudos!
