A Wedding Invitation directed by Peter Jackson

A Wedding Invitation directed by Peter Jackson

Today in the mail, I received my invitation for the summer wedding of Harry Knowles and Patricia Jones. Can’t wait. But, what was certainly unique about this invite, was that it came in the form of a DVD. You push play, and Kiwi special effects wizard Richard Taylor is sitting back in his WETA offices, beaming about the WETA Collectibles division’s latest line of miniature figurines: the Harry and Patricia Collection, to be unveiled on their wedding day. Essentially, as we see in the video, they are a series of Harry and Patricia figurines paying homage to classic genre film characters. I’m not going to try to describe the genius of what you see in this eight-minute mock doc, except to say that it’s pretty evident these figurines are in fact the real thing… and incredibly well-crafted.

The eight-minute video was produced by none other than Kiwi filmmaker (and WETA co-founder) Peter Jackson, a longtime friend of Harry’s. There are multiple layers to this video, not least of which is the invitation for Harry and Patricia’s nuptials. It’s a pretty brilliant way to invite folks to your wedding, I must say. And, Jackson and company made a tight and inspired throwback to the overwrought industrial videos of the 1980s (complete with VHS camcorder-quality cinematography). Of course, the easiest way to show you, would be to post it on YouTube. But that ain’t gonna happen. I wouldn’t be shocked if you found it online somewhere… likely after the ceremony (would you want everyone with Quicktime or Flash to know the details of your wedding?).
