Cannes Countdown: Midnight Movies

Cannes Countdown: Midnight Movies

One of my favorites memories from Cannes 2006, was lining up around midnight outside the Lumiere theater, awaiting the world premiere of John Cameron Mitchell’s Shortbus. It was an electric screening, played through the roof. Part of this was helped by the time slot, I believe. So, I’m equally as excited about this year’s midnight selections. There are three to be exact: Abel Ferrera’s provocative Go Go Tales, Olivier Assayas’ thriller Boarding Gate, and Mark Pellington & Catherine Owens’ concert doc U2 3D. All three are inching up my must-see list, and it’s a pretty long list. Interestingly, Asia Argento (no stranger to Cannes) co-stars in both Go Go Tales and Boarding Gate. Meanwhile, U2 3D should be a lot of fun. The Lumiere theater in Cannes is a beautiful movie palace, and I cannot wait to watch the world’s best band of the moment in 3D on that mammoth screen. For more on each: check out the resourceful official site for Go Go Tales, get some snippets of info on Boarding Gate via an Argento fansite, and get a detailed Sunday Times look at how U2 3D compares to other recent releases using the technology.
