Late last night, hundreds of people — most of them children — gathered outside Bank Square Books here in Mystic, CT (where I am attending a wedding). Anticipating the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the kids enjoyed a sidewalk party and many wandered around in costume as they anxiously waited for the book to go on sale.

A group of us chatted with the kids (and a few parents) about the Potter series. We never had such anticipation for a book release when we were kids, but wondered if this is essentially their “Star Wars”…

I lined at a big bookstore by my apartment here in São Paulo, and it was almost all adults or older teenagers… of course the children will probably have to wait for the Portuguese translation to come out in a few months. It is pretty amazing to see a book get this much hype!
