Kennedy Campaigns for His Springfield

The Guardian reports on Senator Ted Kennedy’s recent appearance in a campaign to bring a “hometown premiere” of The Simpsons Movie to Springfield, Mass. While there are 14 Springfields in this contest (including one in Nebraska that doesn’t even have a movie theater), some assume Kennedy’s appearance helps give Massachusetts the edge. Especially since Simpsons character Mayor Joe Quimby is seemingly based on the real-life politician. But, who knows? The contest winner will be announced soon. It sounds like a brilliant way to market the film to Middle America, but do they risk pissing off the 13 losing towns? I’m sure they’ve come up with a sweet consolation prize.
