“Sunshine”: Hot or Cold?

"Sunshine": Hot or Cold?

I can’t say I’m surprised that reviews are favorable to mixed on Danny Boyle’s metaphysical sci-fi odyssey “Sunshine.” There’s enough surface missteps in plot, narrative and character for nitpicky mainstream viewers to be distracted from the visual wonders on display. But as a cinematic experience, the movie is stunning, filled with gorgeous special effects and phantasmagoric splendor. In writing about the film for Tomorrow Unlimited and SEED Magazine, I kept thinking about the movie’s tactile sense: Every element is on display — fire, water, earth, and wind — in such palpable detail. I can’t remember a movie recently that so captured feelings of hot and cold, that so understood light and dark. And it ain’t boring, either. So why such a fuss from critics? This is what I call summer entertainment.
